WHAT WE DO
Our Mission:
We are a faith-based non-profit organization located in Hamtramck that serves as a compassionate ministry, strengthening families through community connections and offering help with basic human needs to residents. Helping to build a more resilient, food-secure community by providing the tools needed to build self-sufficiency.
BUILDING FOOD SECURE COMMUNITIES
Our Pantry policies and best practices address the barriers that keep families food insecure. While meeting the unique needs of our community.
As the only food pantry in the greater metro Detroit area using the nationally known SWAP food-ranking system, we teach clients how to choose healthy foods. We collaborate with EMU REACH, a CDC-funded program, to educate clients about the link between poor nutrition and chronic disease and provide nutrition education programs such as Cooking Matters and Healthy recipes in our nutrition corner.
Together With EMU REACH and SOPHE ..(Society for Public Health Education), we implemented policies, systems, and environmental changes that prioritize trauma-informed and resilience-focused principles.
We are one of two pantries in Metro Detroit to receive the NPP Gold badge for our trauma-informed approach at the food pantry in 2023.
Proud Partner Agency of Gleaners and Forgotten Harvest
Detroit Friendship House is honored to be a partner agency with Gleaners and Forgotten Harvest. Through these partnerships, we’re able to provide fresh, nutritious food to hundreds of families in our community each month. Their support and collaboration help us enhance our food distribution efforts and ensure that everyone has access to the resources they need.
Together, we’re working to create a food-secure community where every family can thrive!
